Recently, while trying to start my old 1986 JD755 Model (following many months of trouble free operation) after turning the ignition switch to the off position and back again to engage the starter, the starter would not crank. The starter has been rebuilt and the battery was replaced with a new one a short time ago. The fuel pump was replaced about a year ago. With the ignition switch on and engaged, the dash panel indicator, head and tail lights are in working order. However, the fuel pump does not have the familiar "clicking" sound of fuel being pumped to the injection pump and the starter motor is silent. Being somewhat of a novice mechanic, is there some way I can troublshoot this problem by tracing electrical current, wire problems, faulty switch, etc. Please advise. Thanks

Sounds like a safety interlock. My mid-80's Ford has one for the PTO and one for the transmission. They disable the starter if either are engaged. There usually is a relay in the circuit that also can fail. Newer tractors often have additional safety interlocks. My Ford doesn't have a lift pump so I don't know if typical designs would disable the pump as well as starter. I don't know that a 755 has a lift-pump so I've got to note that a relay will click once.

Typical trouble-shooting procedures are to take continuity tests through the circuits when the pto and tx are disengaged or to jumper around them temporarily for testing. The difficulty is that if you don't know where they are a manual would be required. Maybe somebody here knows the tractor and can describe the switch locations and wiring. You also might try jostling the pto and tx levers in their neutral positions. I had a switch stick once.
